DVD enclosure Feb 11, 2010
By JB
"Jerry"
This little enclosure is great. I had a 2005 vinatage laptop that died and I pulled the DVD optical drive from it before I recycled it. This enclosure came with the screws and a new tray face plate that perfectly replaced my old face plate. Once I could see the new face plate, it was not to hard to figure out what tabs to push so the old one snapped off and the new one snapped on. This enclosure is for the older IDE slim optical drives, not the newer Sata drives.

Works... Oct 08, 2011
By Caribou Used this to hold the slot-loading cd bay of my 17" 2.33GHz Macbook Pro. (in case there are any others out there trying to make sure this will work with yours)

Slim external USB 2.0 Black CD/DVD Burner Enclosure case For Laptop Notebook slim drive Jan 15, 2010
By Bryant Douglas Smith first off, i haven't used this drive with a computer yet, but once my new netbook ships and i test the drive, i'll update this and tell you all how it worked. until then, it gets 4 stars for lack of good instructions. this shipped in 3 days, which was nice. the packaging was light and easy to get open, but it seemed insolated enough and pretty safe. when i opened it, there was a little brown cardboard box. in it were the black drive enclosure, the user manual (which is LAME and very useless)two screws, two 2.0 usb cables (only one is necessary if your ports are 2.0, which most computers have), and a black cover thing that is seemingly pointless. the disc drive (salvaged from my old dead satellite toshiba laptop) was fairly easy to put into the case, but some instructions would have been nice in case you are a technophobe who doesn't know how to do any of this stuff. i read other reviews about how people's drives didn't fit and they sawed some of the plastic off the end. all i could think while reading that was...YIKES! i didn't want to have to take a metal saw to an electrical unit, but for 10 bucks i figured i'd take a chance. thankfully my drive fit very easily with no problems. i was happy about not having to run the risk of either electrocuting myself or shorting out the drive once it was in. once i was done putting in the old drive, i popped in the screws and-abracadabra-installed! as i said before i haven't tried it on a computer yet, but i promise i will update this once i have. hope this helped, there'll be more later.
***UPDATE 1*** well, my new toshiba netbook came today, and i installed this drive with no troubles whatsoever! it worked like a charm and i don't forsee any issues. i installed several games, burned a few cds and watched a 2 hour long movie using it, and there were no problems other than a slight whirring sound now and then, but that is the fault of my old salvaged drive, not the enclosure. as i said before, i know the enclosure comes with two usb cords, but you only need and will use one. oh and a little side note i changed my rating from 4 stars to 5. it's a good enclosure, so i figured intructions aren't really that big of a deal... i do not think i'm going to have complaints at all with this product. it was a good purchase and i have no regrets. but, should any unforseen event come up that would make this an awful drive, i will update and let you guys know about it. thanks for your time, and make sure you BUY THIS!!!

It's junk. Don't waste your time with it Aug 05, 2011
By Tom Lewis I got this thinking I could salvage a laptop DVD drive. Well, the plastic case is flimsy and does not line up as it should which makes ejecting a DVD impossible. I ended up keeping it because the case broke trying to make it fit properly and I needed to IDE-to-USB interface it had.
You can do much better than this. This is a very cheap case and yes, you get what you pay for. It's junk. Don't waste your time with it.

Simply no good Dec 07, 2010
By D. Adams This thing is junk. Given some of the mixed reviews, I wasn't sure if I should try another enclosure, but I figured this was the best one among the others listed on Amazon. I was very wrong...
First, as others have mentioned, it is missing the faceplate. This is quite stupid seeing as most all laptops now have various shaped faceplates to sit flush with their cases, so the drive has to be used without a cover. Now I think I have some basic face plates that might work, but that's only because I work at a computer shop and have access to a number of these old drives.
Now, while I could deal with the lack of bezel, the lack of functionality is a complete deal breaker for me. I threw in my spare BD-ROM drive and tested it out on my Toshiba ultra-portable laptop. The drive did function, but when I started playing a DVD on it, the video was very glitchy. I tried it on my desktop with exactly the same problem. No matter what disks I used, the video was always distorted. Figuring it might have been the drive, I popped in an old DVD burner. Exact same problems.
So yes, it's going back and I'll probably try another enclosure.
