 Really fun ship to put together but not easy. Feb 05, 2012

I put this ship together 2 separate times. The first time when I was about 12 or 13 and the second time when I was about 22. The instructions are really clear and easy to follow and the pieces are of really good quality. Revell has always been one of my favorite plastic model kit companies. It is a really fun ship to put together but it's definitely for someone who has experience.
I remember the very first time when I put it together, I didn't care much about painting it or putting on the sails. I just cared about actually putting it together. The second time however, I paid close attention to the details and painting it. You can build the ship either with sails or leave it without the sails and just have the ropes. When I built this ship the second time, I left it without the sails. Attaching the sails would be a nightmare... maybe I'll do this the 3rd time around hehe :). Attaching the ropes to the masts was definitely the hardest part. I had to use 2 different tweezers and use them as if they were my fingers. I also had to use glue so that the knots wouldn't untie.

Having put together model ships, airplanes, cars, etc in years past, and also having made wooden toys from scratch over the years, I decided to begin again with the hobby of putting together plastic models again now that I am retired. The Revell USS Constitution is not for the impatient or faint hearted; it is a real challenge. After a month of steady working on it I am down to the rigging and sails. Overall these and what I have previously done could be made better by pictures -- more than just the few on the box. I have gone on the Internet to obtain some pictures of this ship, and that has helped some. One thing that would have been helpful would have been a complete list of supplies needed -- mainly the colors of paint needed. I ordered a set of Testors paints only to find that the colors I needed -- flat white, ten, copper, flat brown weren't included so I had to find these before I could start. Although I live in a city of 35,000+, 27 miles from Dallas, the current nearest store where I could get the paints was a 60 mile round trip. The local WalMart and Target stores do not carry such products unfortunately.

Excellent for kids Dec 28, 2012

I am experienced model builder, grandson (9 years old) is not. I bought the 1:96 size for me and the 1:196 for him. There is a few less pieces but we work on the same sections at the same time. It really helps him to understand.

First of all I must say that this is my first try on something like this. I tried to make the ship as detailed as I could and I think it the end result is good, the ship has a lot of little details that make it really look interesting, which is obviously good.
The problem that I have is that I am an adult and it was pretty complicated to put together some things, I do not know if a kid would actually have the patience and ability to make it without getting frustrated. I think the order in the instruction manual is not the better.

This was the second ship model i've built (3rd model overall), and it wasn't very hard to build. Considering that this model is 1:196 (about a foot long), the pieces are decent size, but still small. Very easy to piece together the big parts (hull and deck). I reccomend being very careful painting and gluing together this model since it will be very detailed in the end.
