plays music - fixes otterbox problem Nov 29, 2010
By Academiannut

So there are many dock extenders in the 20-30 dollar range that fix the otterbox problem (where you cant plug your phone into your stereo while its in its box). I saw this one for 4 bucks and thought, what the hell, I'll give it a shot.
I had to be very careful in plugging it in - it didn't seem to fit the connecter super well, so I had to look very closely at what I was doing. Once I got it plugged in, it initially made this static-y sound through the stereo speakers, so I thought the sound quality might be bad.
Once I plugged the phone in, the music sounded fine. HOwever, I noticed that if you twist the cord one way or the other, the amount of sound decreases or increases from each speaker, so you have to be careful to have the cord in the right position to get the right sound.
Once I put my phone back in the otterbox case, however, the plug wouldn't fit. This plug is wider than a typical apple plug (which does fit). I've read about people using nail files to file away enough of hte plastic on the sides to make the cord fit. I haven't tried that yet with this one; I'll update this when I do.
At this time, the sound quality seems questionable and I can't plug my phone into the cord while it's in the otterbox, so I'm not getting what I wanted out of this. Therefore 2 stars.
So if you're wondering if this will let you play music on your stereo even while your phone is encased in an otterbox, yes, it will.
I'll try to update after I've had it for a while if it falls apart easily or something like that --

Hard to find item Mar 07, 2011

I was afraid of this, but the cable does not work. I have ran into this before and these cables are tough to find. Would not recommend.

Works as extension, not magic Aug 24, 2011
By Dave Brown In my car the dock wire does not reach the dash where I wanted to mount my iPod/iPhone dock. Using this I was able to hide the connecting parts and all the mess under the plastics, run the extension out to the dash, and mount a clean looking dock. It does a good job, does not pick up noise, and all the wires are connected through, so even video works (but only because the car handles it). Does exactly what it says with no fuss. The device end has little click-in hooks to keep it connected to your dock or device, so I'm very pleased with it.
BEWARE:
Extension cables are not magic. It does not enable or restore missing functionality from your dock, it just extends an existing connection. The connection at the ends is the same size as the first generation of dock connectors, so I can see some case users hoping this is something it is not. It does not tell your dock to charge/send video/sync when the things at each end ignore each other. There are ways to solve the other problems, but this is just an extension cord.

Noisy cable making unusable, shipping rip-off Mar 08, 2011
By Donald E. Cameron
"Don"
The item connected between my Ipod speakers and my Itouch. The cable generated enough noise on the speakers that I can't use it. It didn't matter if I shifted the cable around or checked the connections. Thing is, the item was $[...] and the shipping $[...], so if I ship it back, I still got ripped off, didn't I? It came in a tiny package probably costing $[...], so the profit was in the shipping. The cable is junk. I spent about $[...] and got a very acceptable substitute from Best Buy that doesn't generate noise and if I had a problem all I had to do was return it to the store. Sometimes the cheapest item is a rip-off

DO NOT buy if you're looking for an extension for an Otterbox case Jan 10, 2011
By mikeforpope Do not buy this if you are looking for something that will fit your Otterbox. I bought this for connectivity to a Sony docking station to my iPhone without having to take of the Otterbox cover. IT DOES NOT FIT. PERIOD! If you want to make it fit, you'll have to file away either some of your Otterbox case, or the extension cord. [...]
If someone else has found something that will work for an Otterbox case, please comment on this so I can find the right product. This one is not it if you're looking to use an Otterbox case with your iPhone. [...]
